Chennai traffic
This is my first blog of the year, and the third about the traffic confusion in this "dharmam migu chennai." With over thousands of vehicles bought every month, the roads are just getting congested and you can not blame the civic authorities for that. My observation is that people who have started driving a two-wheeler within the last decade are the ones who cause too much of nuisance.
Most of them do not spend just Rs 200 for a rear-view mirror though they "buy" a trendy bike for almost half-a-lakh of rupees! According to this generation of drivers it (the mirror) SPOILS the look of their bike!
Overtaking on the left is the order of the day! A few days back I was driving on Cathedral road and there were no vehicles moving towards Gemini flyover. A motocyclist drove pretty fast and overtook me on the left, leaving me just shiver for a few seconds. This is a very common sight. Many people driving motor cars are seen these days trying to overtake on the left.
Every inch of the main roads is occupied by the road users these days! In addition to the existing chaos, people keep honking!
Is there a way to control all these and make people use the roads effectively?
Who REALLY cares?

Traffic madness in Chennai
Having lived for 40 years in smaller towns I had lot of reservation in driving in Chennai when I moved in with my family and my very own favorite Honda Sleek bike in 1993 . The traffic arrangement then was good, people were courteous and bigger vehicles always let the smaller ones to move about without blaring horns or threatening them from behind/sides on busy thoroughfares.
Now after 15 years, and after a knee surgery, anti-hypertensives, and a gear less scooter-type vehicle I find myself to be in a big web! I never felt the difficulty when I used to drive from Madras to Vellore/Kanchipuram/Chingleput/Bangalore and a host of other southern cities.
The traffic arrangement is just chaotic. Traffic signals are switched off during peak hour! Thesre are not many "men" to control the traffic. Two wheelers literally weave through the traffic and every possible motorable space (including space between two buses) is "utilized" by the youngsters who always move about with their helmets comfortably seated on the fuel tank of their bikes! Not many policemen seem to be questioning the erring public, and on reaching arterial roads they wear it just to satisfy the constable on duty. Can not the department think of bringing in a more stern action on the violaters than 'warning' them? How about handing over a headgear and charge the erring motorist? How many helmets one would want to carry around or display at home??!!
Stop lines are drawn at all major interjunctions and are useful for these "frenzied" drivers to cross over it and drve in even before the green light is on!
On the famous Anna Salai (I prefer calling this Mount Road, though) you can always see the twowheelers driving on all lanes, driving other drivers mad.
I appeal to all my friends who read this and those who use the roads of Madras to be more couteous to other drivers.
God save all of us

Kaanum Pongal - God save Marina
If Pongal is missing, why people go aroung the great city of Chennai in search of that instead of searching that in their respective homes!!!!!!
As a Mylaporean, I have prepared myself to be ready for the great "kaanum Pongal" when I anticipate of at least 100 thousands of trash to be deposited by the citizens of Chennai on the beautiful(?) Marina.

Road traffic in Madras
It is Mad Rush or Madras??
Every morning I drive from Mylapore to mahalingapuram, and the journey takes my life out. It is so tiring because at many places people weave through the ongoing traffic leaving "conservative" drivers like me in total fury. However, I try to be cool and at times (?), 'shout' at ramasamies, and rajendirans, and ilangoes who drive like fools.

Konapet - revisited in 2006
I revisited Konapet after five long years. My last visit, shall I call it "lost visit" was to get the ancestral house vacated in the year 2000. I left with a heavy heart, and of course my lacrimal glands were fully activated. Could not control my emotions, I decided to take a bus to trichy and then from there an omni bus and thus avoided traveling with the articles from that 60+ year old domain.
This time, I went with my mother and sister for a day. Konapet has not changed at all. The same old place, I felt the warmth, enjoyed the fragrance of the familiar soil. Alagaperumal Oorani, our family friend and well wisher Shri.Maapillai Chettiar, and Kalimuthu Annan of the once-great Saraswathi Stores, my very own school, the old class rooms, and not to forget the temples and the way people remembered Doctor ayya --- everything moved me a lot.
Given an option I would like to come here again for the "poochorithal" next year.
My Love for Konapet just gotten stronger by this lightening visit.
